Book Traveling Thursdays // Book Featuring Your Favorite Friendship + Special Announcement

Book Traveling Thursdays - Featuring Friendship

Book Traveling Thursdays is a weekly feature created by Danielle’s Book Blog and The Girl Who Read Too Much that highlights book covers from around the world.

This week, I chose Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein. This book not only features one of my favorite friendships, but one of my favorite quotes about friendship.

It’s like being in love, discovering your best friend.

Now, onto the covers!

Original Covers

These are two of the U.S. covers for Code Name VerityI really like the one on the left from Egmont Press, because of the silhouette and the woman smelling the rose. The significance of that makes more sense once you read the book.

I am less engaged by the one the left from Disney-Hyperion. Although he planes and the bikes are significant I feel like I want this scene to hang on my wall instead of on a book cover.

Favorite Covers

My favorite covers are the English Disney-Hyperion hardcover, the English Electric Monkey Edition, and the Spanish edition.

The thing is that the first two are used a lot in different variations. For example the Disney-Hyperion hardcover is also used for the Portuguese and Turkish editions, and the Electric Monkey edition’s themes are repeated in the Polish edition.

The idea of bound hands in the Disney-Hyperion cover is a nice abstraction of what the book is about, and I love the font used for this cover. I also love the use of space in this cover.

The Electric Monkey edition blends the two U.S. covers together really well. I love the plane on the top and the woman behind the chain link fence on the bottom.

The Spanish edition is my third favorite because I love the model they chose to depict “Verity” and the clouds and the plane all capture the themes of the book. Plus, once again I really like the use of old school typeface with script fonts.

Least Favorite Covers

The covers of this book are very similar, but there are a few different ones. For this book, my least favorite covers are the Chinese, Swedish, and Czech editions.

The Chinese cover just doesn’t make sense to me. I feel like the colors are supposed to be either camouflage or wireless set code, but I feel like it just loses effect and isn’t engaging as a cover.

The Swedish version isn’t bad, it’s just that when I look closer, the blonde looks like she’s been photoshopped in. She’s sitting at a really odd angle. Plus, the overall effect leaves me the impression that this book is a romance.

Last, is the Czech cover, which isn’t bad, but the woman on the cover isn’t “Verity.” In the first few chapters, readers learn that Verity is blonde. I am sorry, but incongruous covers are a miss for me.

That’s it for this edition of Book Traveling Thursdays, but before you all go, I have an announcement to make!

This week, Catia from The Girl Who Read Too Much announced that she would be stepping down from leading this meme and asked for volunteers to take it over. So…

Starting in September, I will be continuing Book Traveling Thursdays! If you are interested in participating, you can follow the Goodreads group here, where I will be posting the upcoming topics!

And if you have something you’d like to see as an upcoming Book Traveling Thursdays theme, comment below, or hit me up on Goodreads! I look forward to continuing this meme that I have really enjoyed participating in, and I hope you guys will join me!
