The Pastry Book Tag

I found this tag over at Calliope The Book Goddess and decided to give it a try! I wasn’t tagged to do it, but I recently took a macaron making class and I am feeling really into checking out pastries. So, here we go!

Croissant
Name a popular book or series that everyone (including you) love

 

I usually end up having a very different opinion of hyped books, even though I do enjoy them, so I am going to go with the basic answer and say Harry Potter. I mean the series is 20 years old and there’s still a community that sorts themselves into houses. (I’m a Slytherin by the way!)

Macaron
Name a book that was hard to get through but worth it at the end

 

I am going to have to say Emma in the Night by Wendy Walker. I really loved the premise of the book, and most of it was interesting, but I really started to get frustrated with it. I was really happy with the turn it took towards the end, but I can’t really say more without giving away the plot.

Vol-au-vent
Name a book that you thought would be amazing but fell flat

 

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger was that book for me. I just never really got the point of the story, and the relationship didn’t have a whole lot of appeal to me. I even tried to watch the movie after reading the book and everything still felt really forced.

Name a book that you thought would be one thing but turned out to be something else

 

I’m going to say Most Wanted by Lisa Scottoline because I expected more from it. I thought that it would have a good mystery and a lot of really rich characterization, but in the end, the book didn’t do any of that, and I was kind of disappointed in it.

Profiterole
Name a book or series that doesn’t get enough attention

 

I feel like I tend to read a lot of mainstream books, but one that really caught my attention in the last year was Good As Gone by Amy Gentry.

It’s about a child who is kidnapped and comes back to her family, but they start to question if she’s really their daughter. It sounds cliched, but the story is presented really well, and I really like Amy’s take on the situation and the dual narratives that are presented.

Croquembouche
Name a book or series that’s extremely complex

 

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde came to me on a recommendation for an audio book series. I’ve tried three times to listen to it so far and I think there’s just too much going on for me to actually process it while I am driving or anything like that.

So, I think I am going to have to read it in two mediums. And I really want to read it, it sounds like something that is totally up my alley, and apparently the rest of the Thursday Next Series is even better.

Name a movie or TV show based off a book that you liked better than the book itself

 

I really struggle to think of a movie that I like better than the book, but I think that If I Stay by Gayle Forman comes pretty close.

Empanada
Name a book that was bittersweet

 

Okay, Ola! Here it comes again! Yep, you guessed it City of Thieves by David Benioff! Can’t help it, this book is made of epic sadness and some terrific jokes. I don’t think there was ever any book that has made me feel “all the feels” like this book.

Kolompeh
Name a book or series that takes place somewhere other than your home country

 

While it starts in America, the majority of Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger takes place in England. This is one of my favorite books, by far. I remember reading this and really enjoying every moment of it.

Pate a Choux
Name one food from a book or series that you would like to try

 

I don’t know what possessed me to latch onto this, but Anzac Biscuits came up in Liane Moriarty’s The Hypnotist’s Love Story and they sounded delicious from the five minutes of conversation that discussed them and the weird circumstances that came to Ellen O’Farrell having Anzac Biscuits in her house. I ended up looking them up after I stopped my car, and they’re basically an oatmeal cookie with coconut mixed in, so they sound right up my ally.
